The book features two artists, Anthony Calleja and Joseph Calleja.

Anthony Calleja’s artistic career started at a very young age, when he was only a nine year old and he became a ‘studio hand’ in the workshop of his uncle Anton Agius, himself a protagonist of one of the BOV Retrospective Exhibitions. Humble by nature, Anthony’s works of art often feature the human form and himself as subjects.

Joseph Calleja is considered as an international contemporary artist. He left our shores early on in his career to settle in Toronto, Canada, where he made a name for himself and for Malta as an avant-garde contemporary artist. His works were the result of research into contemporary artistic forms of expression. Motorised sculptures in chrome and bronze were his idiom, putting him at the forefront with other leading Western artists in the late 1960s. Nonetheless he retained his Maltese identity and Gozitan roots alive in his works to date. Teaching is another characteristic of this artist whose works we have the privilege to host this year. Through teaching he opened up young minds to modern and contemporary art forms, whilst concurrently maintaining his own artistic freedom, thereby enabling himself to be free of the commercial strings of the art market.
